Lichenan / Isolichenan

Structural description

Lichenan (lichenin) is a linear polysaccharide isolated from lichen (ex Cetraria islandica, Evernia prunastri). It is a homologous (1-3) and (1-4) β-D-glucan. Lichenan structure is similar to that of barley and oat β-D-glucan; but the proportion of 1-4 to 1-3 linkage is higher (approximately 2:1).

Isolichenan (isolichenin), a cold-water-soluble linear (1-3) and (1-4) α-glucan, with different linkage groups among diverse taxa of lichens.

Activities and Uses

Recent data showed that lichenan exhibits potential anticancer and antiviral properties. Lichenan was also found to be a serious candidate for plant health product use (Stübler et al., 1996. Journal of Phytopathology, 144, no1;. 37-43).
