Sugar specificity: Mannose (Man)

Additional specificity details: αMan ; βMan ; α1-3Man ; α1-3Man ; Methyl-α-mannose (MeαMan)

Structure: Dimeric lectin composed of two subunits of 13 kDa

The lectin has specificity toward mannose and display a high specific agglutination activity with trypsin- treated rabbit erythrocytes, whereas human red blood cells were not agglutinated. NPA and amaryllis bulb lectin (HHA) bind internal or external mannose and the binding is not inhibited by D-Glc or D-GlcNAc. The lectin reacted strongly with yeast galactomannans and recognized various alpha-1,6 and alpha-1,3-mannan. NPA has an insecticidal activity and was reported to be age-related mitogenic with the lymphocytes. The lectin is better than GNA for the isolation of a-2 macroglobulin from plasma, although this is not absolutely specific.
