Structure: Homotetrameric lectin composed of four subunits of 12.8 kDa. One binding site per monomer which requires one calcium cations for binding.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is an opportunistic pathogen that produces two small soluble lectins, LecA and LecB, also named respectively PAI-L and PAII-L. LecA had a cytotoxic activity on human epithelial cells in primary culture. The exposure of these cells to concentrations of LecA of >10 μg/mL inhibited their growth and decreased ciliary activity. With higher concentrations of LecA (100 μg/ml), cellular lesions were observed. LecA was also shown to have a cytotoxic effect on the digestive epithelium. LecA agglutinates human and rabbit erythrocytes.
