Ulvan

Structural description

Ulvans are structural acid polysaccharides present in cell wall of green algae (Ulva and Enteromorpha). They are highly sulphated and essentially composed with rhamnose 3-sulfate, xylose, xylose 2-sulfate, glucuronic acid and iduronic acide units. The four recurrent units are:

  • Ulvanobiuric 3-sulfate type A acid β(1-4) D-GlcA-α(1-4) L-Rha 3 sulfate

  • Ulvanobiuric 3-sulfate type B acid β(1-4)L-IdoA- α(1-4)-L-Rha 3 sulfate

  • Ulvanobiose 3-sulfate acid β(1-4)-D-Xyl-α(1-4)-L-Rha 3 sulfate

  • Ulvanobiose 2’, 3 disulfate acid β(1-4) D-Xyl 2-sulfate- α(1-4)-L-Rha 3 sulfate

Activities and Uses

Ulvan presents several potentially valuable biological properties for agricultural, food and pharmaceutical applicationsamong which Anticoagulant activities (heparin like), Antioxydant activities, Antihyperlipidemic activities, Antitumoral activities.
